3D modeling and animation for a video installation by Margit Lukács & Persijn Broersen, drawing on George Clifford III’s 18th-century collection of exotic plants and Carolus Linnaeus’s rigid system of classification.

APPROACH

Modeling and animating the plant replicas in Blender, together with 3D animator Tom Sebestik, so they sway to life as a fierce crowd struggling to escape the straitjackets imposed on them.

RESULT

A video installation exhibited at Centraal Museum Utrecht, pairing the animated plants with a musical compilation by concert pianist Daria van den Bercken.

This installation by Broersen & Lukács draws on George Clifford III’s 18th-century collection of exotic plants, classified by botanist Carolus Linnaeus through a rigid system shaped more by personal taste than objective observation.

In the video, these plant replicas sway to life as a fierce crowd, struggling to escape the straitjackets imposed on them – challenging the order once forced upon them.
